Gary Matthewman
Introduction
Gary Matthewman studied in London, Berlin and Vienna. He has been described by The Times and The Independent as ‘movingly perceptive’ and ‘quick-witted,' and is now established as one of Britain's leading song pianists.
Recent and forthcoming appearances abroad include his debut recitals at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Musikverein in Vienna, as well as in Berlin, Amsterdam, Basel, Lucerne, Madrid, Baden-Baden, Zagreb, Washington DC, Toronto, São Paulo, Beijing, Melbourne and Sydney.
His UK Festival performances include Aldeburgh, Newbury, Hay-on-Wye, Buxton, Leeds Lieder, Oxford Lieder, Glyndebourne, North Norfolk, Bath and Sheffield (Music in the Round). In London, he has appeared at Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, the Royal Opera House, and in the Rosenblatt Recital Series.
Recent and future recital partners include Sir Thomas Allen, Sumi Jo, Mark Padmore, Lisa Milne, Kate Royal, Andrei Bondarenko, Adam Plachetka, Roderick Williams, Ian Bostridge, Max-Emanuel Cencic, Elizabeth Watts, Markus Werba, Sylvia Schwartz, Jacques Imbrailo, Sally Matthews and Sarah-Jane Brandon.
As official accompanist for vocal contests, he has worked for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, the 'Das Lied' - International Song Competition in Berlin, the Hilde Zadek Competition in Vienna, and this Summer will join the Queen Sonja International Music Competition for singers in Oslo.
Gary has made numerous live broadcasts and recordings for BBC radio 3, and his recording of Schubert's Winterreise with Matthew Rose for Stone Records was released early this year. In 2009 Gary conceived the Lied in London recitals, dedicated to the performance of song in a relaxed and intimate setting. He is a song coach for the Jette Parker Young Artists at the Royal Opera House.
