Christian Vásquez

Introduction

Conductor Christian Vasquez is a protégé of the internationally known Venezuelan “Sistema” and has already established himself as one of the most promising developing talents from the Americas. Born in 1984 in Caracas, Christian Vasquez first joined the San Sebastian de los Reyes es Symphony Orchestra as a violinist at the age of nine.

He has appeared regularly with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States, as well as Latin America.

In 2001, he began his conducting studies under the tutelage of Maestro José Antonio Abreu, who has been a great proponent of his career.  Soon thereafter, he was appointed as Music Director of the Aragua Juvenile Symphony Orchestra Jose Felix Ribas.  His debut as a conductor with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela took place in April 2008 in Caracas conducting Mahler’s Symphony no.2.

In May 2008, he led the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Stravinsky’s Firebird, and has subsequently returned twice for educational projects; in June 2009 in the Fete de la Musique series and in March 2010 conducting Tchaikovsky Symphony no.4.  His relationship with the Orchestre Philharmonique is set to continue in March 2011 when he will lead the orchestra in subscription concerts at the Salle Pleyel with violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann.

Christian’s debut with the Gävle Symfoniorkester conducting Dvorak’s Symphony no.9 in October 2009 led to his immediate re-invitation and appointment as Principal Guest Conductor from 2010 to 2014.  Other notable debuts included six concerts with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa with Pinchas Zukerman as soloist, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and recording sessions for the Bayerische Rundfunk with the Bamberg Symphoniker.  His debut with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Norway conducting Dvorak’s Symphony no.8 resulted in an immediate re-invitation to appear twice in the orchestra’s 2010 – 2011 season.  Christian also led the Los Angeles Philharmonic during his participation in their Young Artist Fellowship programme.

To open his 2010 – 2011 season Christian will lead the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra of Venezuela on a major European debut tour, which will include performances at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Royal Festival Hall in London.  He will also make debuts with the London Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra.  Christian will also make his debut in Japan leading the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra on a tour including concerts in Tokyo, Sapporo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya.
