'Les Troyens'

In a rare American appearance, internationally renowned soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci gave a stunning performance earlier this month as Cassandra in Berlioz's 'Les Troyens' at the opening the 2008 Tanglewood Festival. Conducted by James Levine, the BSO and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus revived a score with which Levine has a long history, having first performed an uncut version of the 5 hour masterpiece in 1983 with the MET Opera, New York.

In a role which previously gained her great acclaim at the Châtalet Theatre with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Antonacci was hailed as one of the 'glories' of the performance with her intensly dramatic interpretation of the character. Cassandra is a role generally considered to be fairly daunting, but an unflinching Antonacci "...deployed it with terrific subtlety and boatloads of charisma" (Jeremy Eichler, The Boston Globe)

Others said that she "...brought exceptional charisma and personal beauty to the stage, projecting a commanding presence, even in her position behind the orchestra." (Michael Miller, The Berkshire Review for the Arts)

Anna Caterina will now go on to sing Medea in Turin, followed by performances of her extremely successful one woman shows 'Altre Stelle' and 'Era la notte'.
