This Week at Askonas HoltAlexander Briger makes his Gothenburg Symphony debut this week, stepping in at short notice for an indisposed Peter Eotvos. The programme opens with Messiaen's Le Tombeau Resplendissant, followed by Eotvos' Violin Concerto (soloist Akiko Suwenai) and Scriabin's Symphony No.3. Following the Goteborg concerts on 3 and 4 September, the complete programme is presented by Musik Fest Berlin 08 in the Philharmonie, Berlin on Saturday 6 September.

Paul Goodwin conducts Handel's Orlando at the Sydney Opera House, for Opera Australia. The producer is Justin Way and cast includes Rachelle Durkin (Angelica), Hye Seoung Kwon (Dorinda), Sonia Prina (Orlando), Tobias Cole (Medoro) and Richard Alexander (Zoroastro).
Myung-Whun Chung tours Asia with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. Concerts take place in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai and Beijing. Programmes include pieces by Mendelssohn, Mahler, Rossini, Puccini among others.

Julian Rachlin's summer chamber festival in Dubrovnik begins with an impressive line-up of artists including Janine Jansen, Leif Ove Andsnes, Thomas Hampson, Lawrence Power and Mischa Maisky as well as Krzysztof Penderecki as the composer in residence, a special project of music by Alberto Iglesias and performed by John Malkovich, and Sir Roger Moore reading letters by Mozart interspersed by the composer's chamber music. Julian has been hosting his "and Friends" Festival in Dubrovnik for the past eight years and it is rapidly gaining international recognition as one of the most interesting of the European summer chamber festivals. Daniele Gatti appears with the Royal Philharmonic for the second year running.
