New Doors Opening for Magnificent MezzoMichelle DeYoung is in the middle of a wonderful year both personal and professional. She has just opened at the Salzburg Festival singing the role of Judith, the questioning wife of Bartok's Duke Bluebeard in a new production by Johan Simons conducted by Peter Eötvös. She has had a huge success:-
"Michelle DeYoung’s Judith is a sensation......the performance is one of sophisticated physicality combined with consummate mastery. The sound is burnished and sensual, the technique flawless, the whole fantastically gripping." Financial Times
"And Michelle DeYoung, the mezzo-soprano singing Judith, had a superb night. This is no walk in the park, the role of Judith, and Ms. DeYoung handled it with ease. Bartók's tricky intervals posed no problems for her. She was always accurate and clean, and she made her usual warm, interesting, enveloping sound. Her high C was glorious — and sounded more like a soprano's, frankly, than a mezzo's." New York Sun

“Michelle DeYoung ist mit kraftvoll leuchtendem Sopran eine fantastische Besetzung für die Rolle der Judith” “Michelle DeYoung is a fantastic singer for the role of the Judith with a powerfully luminous soprano”. Rober Jungwirth, Klassikinfo.de vom 6.8.2008
Michelle DeYoung und Falk Struckmann agieren virtuos, singen expressiv und perfekt. “Michelle DeYoung and Falk Struckmann operate like virtuosi, singing expressively and perfectly“ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung vom 8.8.2008
“hinreißend, dramatisch, intensiv: Michelle DeYoung” “fascinating, dramatic, intense: Michelle DeYoung” Kurier, 8.8.2008
This season started with her debut at La Scala, Milan with Brangäne in 'Tristan und Isolde' with Barenboim before returning to her beloved Metropolitan Opera in New York for Fricka and Brangäne. She then flew to the UK to start a five month residence in Europe singing her favourite repertoire. May saw her sing Judith with the London Symphony Orchestra under Boulez, a private recital at the Louvre in Paris and Mahler's third Symphony with Gustavo Dudamel and the Orchestra de Santa Caecilia in Rome. At the end of June she made her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in the Munich Festival as Brangäne before travelling the short distance to Salzburg to make her stage debut there as Judith. She rounds of her summer in Europe with Brangäne at the Berlin Deutsche Staastoper with Barenboim.
Into this wonderful professional schedule she also managed to squeeze in a milestone in her private life: her wedding to husband Allan. A fabulous year for her.
