Christine Rice
Christine Rice read physics at Balliol College, Oxford before entering the Royal Northern College of Music. At The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden her operatic roles have included Judith ('Duke Bluebeard's Castle'), Siebel ('Faust'), Concepcion ('L'Heure Espagnol'), Emilia (‘Otello’), Suzuki (‘Madama Butterfly’), Miranda (Ades’ ‘The Tempest’) the title role in ‘The Rape of Lucretia’, Sonyetka (‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’) and Ariadne in the world premiere of Birtwistle’s ‘The Minotaur’. She made her debuts at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich as the title role in ‘Ariodante’, Frankfurt opera as Penelope ('Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria'), the Teatro Real Madrid as Hermia (‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’) and Seattle Opera as Dorabella (‘Cosi Fan Tutte’).
Christine has a busy concert career, appearing throughout the UK, Europe, North America and at the BBC Promenade Concerts. She made her debut at the Edinburgh Festival as Erissena in a concert performance of Handel’s ‘Poro’ with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Emmanuelle Haim. Her recordings include Alisa in ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’, De Falla's ‘El Amor Brujo’, Elgar's ‘Sea Pictures’, Berlioz ‘Les Nuits D’Ete’, Guilhen in Vincent d'Indy's ‘Fervaal’ under Jean-Yves Ossonce, Wolf’s ‘Spanisches Liederbuch’ for the BBC and Respighi's 'Il Tramonto' with Antonio Pappano.
Future operatic engagements include Giulietta in ‘Les Contes d’Hoffman’ and Conception for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; 'Partenope' and 'Madam Butterfly' for English National Opera and Penelope for the Teatro Real in Madrid.
