Rosemary Joshua

Soprano Rosemary Joshua was born in Cardiff and studied at the Royal College of Music.

She has sung Adèle (Die Fledermaus) at The Metropolitan Opera, New York; the title role of The Cunning Little Vixen at La Scala, Milan, Flanders Opera, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and at the Netherlands Opera; Susanna and Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) at the Glyndebourne Festival and Zerlina at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Other appearances have included Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin; Ilia (Idomeneo) in Lisbon; Pamina (Die Zauberflöte); Oscar (Un ballo in maschera) at the Netherlands Opera; the title role of Calisto in Brussels and Juliette (Roméo et Juliette) in San Diego, and Vixen at the Flanders Opera, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and at the Netherlands Opera..

Since making her debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Angelica (Orlando) it is above all as a Handel singer that Rosemary Joshua has built her international reputation. She has sung Ginevra (Ariodante) in San Diego; Poppea (Agrippina) in Cologne, Brussels and Paris; Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare) in Paris, Amsterdam and Florida and the title role in ‘Semele’ to great critical acclaim at the Aix-en-Provence and Innsbruck Festivals, the Flanders Opera, Cologne Opera, the BBC Proms and at the English National Opera (where she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in the category for Outstanding Achievement in Opera). Most recently, she has sung Nitocris (Handel’s ‘Belshazzar’) at the Deutsche Staatsoper, and at the Innsbruck and Aix-en-Provence Festivals.

Engagements this season include Tytania (A Midsummer Night's Dream) at La Scala, Milan; the title role of 'Partenope' at the ENO and her debut at the WNO as Susanna. Future plans include Anne Trulove at La Monnaie, Brussles and Theodora at the Deutsche Staatsoper.

Recent concert appearances include the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Roger Norrington and René Jacobs; Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Mackerras; London Philharmonic Orchestra with Mark Elder; Concentus Musicus Wien with Nikolaus Harnoncourt; Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with Daniel Harding; Netherlands Philharmonic at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, both the City of Birmingham Symphony and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestras with Emmanuelle Haïm and her debut with the New York Philharmonic under Nicholas McGegan.

Her recordings include the title roles in Handel’s 'Semele' and ‘Partenope’ with Christian Curnyn for Chandos; the title role in Handel's 'Esther' for Somm; Angelica with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie for Erato; ‘Saul’, 'Venus and Adonis’ and ‘Dido and Aeneas’ all with René Jacobs for Harmonia Mundi; Sophie in 'Der Rosenkavalier' for Chandos and the Sandman in 'Hansel und Gretel' for Teldec.
