Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
”Music-making that involved risk, vulnerability and emotional exposure… a concert like this sends the listener back into the world a little thrilled, and a little impatient with everything else.” Washington Post
One of the foremost orchestras in the world, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra was led by legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache until 1971, when the orchestra started regular touring abroad. Herbert Blomstedt, Principal Conductor from 1977 - 1982, further strengthened its international renown, while conductor Stig Westerberg contributed greatly to the promotion of Swedish music. Esa-Pekka Salonen was Principal Conductor from 1984 - 1995, during which the orchestra further strengthened its position, chiefly through successful international tours and recordings. He was succeeded by Evgeny Svetlanov in 1997, and in 2002 by Manfred Honeck. The orchestra continues to be an ensemble for the whole of Sweden with regular radio broadcasts from Berwaldhallen to over 80 million listeners a year at home and abroad. The orchestra has continued to perform and commission new, and often Swedish music. The orchestra has received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Orchestral Performance for recordings of works by Sibelius.
Daniel Harding is Music Director of the orchestra, and he will conduct some eight weeks a year in Stockholm as well as touring with the orchestra throughout Europe and beyond.
