Thomas Søndergård

Thomas Søndergård

Thomas Søndergård was born in 1969 and is widely regarded as one of the very best young Danish conductors to have emerged in recent years. Having begun his musical career as a timpanist with the Royal Danish Orchestra, he has now conducted all the Danish orchestras and ensembles, including Danish National, Royal Danish Orchestra, Odense Symphony and Sønderjylland Symphony, and has premiered many new works by Scandinavian composers. In recent seasons he has made highly successful debuts with the City of Birmingham Symphony, Norwegian Radio, Bamberger Symphoniker, Norrköping Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Helsingborg Symphony, Rundfunksinfonieorchester Saarbrücken and Malmö Symphony, and in January 2008 he conducted the Swedish Radio Orchestra's televised 'Twelfth Night' concert to unanimous critical acclaim. Following the success of his Royal Danish Opera debut in 2004 he appears with the company each season and, most recently, conducted 'Barber of Seville' in 2007. He also conducted 'Tosca' for Stuttgart Staatstheater in Spring 2008. Plans for 2008/9 and beyond include debuts with Northern Sinfonia, NACO, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Orchestre Métropolitain, returns to CBSO Norwegian Radio, Danish National, Helsingborg Symphony and further productions for Danish National, Malmö and Stuttgart operas.
