Monday 23 May sees The Royal Opera’s first ever production of Enescu’s operatic masterpiece, ‘Oedipe’, starring Sophie Bevan
as Antigone, Sarah Connolly
as Jocaste, Alan Oke
as a Shepherd and Samuel Dale Johnson
as Thesee. The production is directed by Àlex Ollé and Valentina Carrasco of the acclaimed Catalan company La Fura dels Baus
, and will be conducted by Leo Hussain.
has had an excellent season touring the UK with a double bill of opera – ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ and Elena Langer’s new ‘Figaro gets a Divorce’. He will sing Captain Vere in a new production of ‘Billy Budd
‘ at Opera North next season (also featuring Oliver Johnston
), and will return to the Met for ‘Der Rosenkavalier
‘ with Elīna Garanča
‘Oedipe’ will be Samuel Dale Johnson
’s final production at Covent Garden as part of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, where this season he has sung Wigmaker ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’, Morales ‘Carmen’ and Zalzal ‘L’Étoile’, as well as cover Silvio ‘Pagliacci’ and Albert ‘Werther’. Samuel will sing Conte ‘Le nozze di Figaro
‘ for Scottish Opera before joining the ensemble at Deutsche Oper Berlin for the 2016/17 season.
‘Oedipe’ opens on Monday 23 May, with further performances on 26 and 30 May, and 2, 4 and 8 June 2016. Tickets and more information available here
