Askonas Holt artists ‘bloom’ at ENO.
Last Saturday saw the revival of David McVicar’s production of Der Rosenkavalier for English National Opera at the London Coliseum. The cast included role debuts for Amanda Roocroft as the Marschallin and Sophie Bevan as Sophie with Sarah Connolly reprising the role of Octavian under the baton of Edward Gardner.
It was a hugely successful evening for all four artists: “A marvellous revival” wrote Edward Seckersen in the Independent “cast at international strength and brilliantly conducted” with special mention for Amanda who “gives us a woman……breaking our hearts in the final moments of the first act”, Sarah “now peerless in the role” and Sophie “…rapturous”. The Guardian comments that “The composer is also fortunate to have equivalent champions in the pit, where Edward Gardner provides a keenly alert and immaculately balanced orchestral account…” . The Times agreed that “it feels new-minted in its visual beauty and its musical rapture”.
The remaining performances are 4th, 11th, 17th, 24th, 27th February 2012.
