Last week (Wednesday 17th July) Thomas Adès conducted his latest composition, a song-cycle entitled Totentanz, at the BBC Proms with Christianne Stotijn and Simon Keenlyside. Totentanz has received unanimous critical acclaim and has been hailed as “one of the best concerts of the year” (The Times, 19 July 2013). Please click here to read the complete reviews.
The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and will be broadcast on Sunday 28th July on BBC4. An Adès world première is always a red letter day for the BBC Promenade Concerts. Alongside his new work, Thomas Adès conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem and Lutoslawski’s Cello concerto.
Christianne Stotijn has performed a range of contemporary music, including Michel Van Der Aa’s Spaces of Blank. For the MDG label, Christianne has recorded Frank Martin’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke, which was awarded the ECHO Klassik Award in 2008. Christianne will première a new commission by American composer Ned Rorem in recital in America next year.
Simon is a passionate exponent of Thomas Adès’ music. He sang Prospero in the world première of Adès The Tempest at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden which has been recorded by EMI. He reprised the role last year at the Metropolitan Opera on the occasion of the work’s New York première and this production will be released on DVD next month. This year he sings the title role in Wozzeck in Vienna, Madrid, Munich and London.
