Tonight, Russian stars Aida Garifullina and Albina Shagimuratova join a stellar line-up for a special gala concert in Moscow’s Red Square.
The concert is a prelude to the opening of the 2018 FIFA World Cup which begins tomorrow. The line-up is completed by singers Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Yusif Eyvazov, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Juan Diego Flórez, and pianist Denis Matsuev, all accompanied by St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Valery Gergiev.
Aida will perform Gounod’s Je veux vivre from her award-winning debut album, plus a duet from Rigoletto with Juan Diego Flórez, and Albina will perform Il dolce suono from Lucia di Lammermoor. Albina is well-known for her portrayal of Lucia, winning several awards and receiving unanimous praise from critics: “The greatest compliment to Albina Shagimuratova is to say that she belongs in yet another trilogy: with Callas and Sutherland as three great Lucias.” (Culture Map, Houston)
Aida will remain in Moscow to perform alongside pop star Robbie Williams in the official opening ceremony on Thursday 14 June. To coincide with these performances, she has released an EP entitled Midnight in Moscow.
The celebratory performance will be broadcast live on Russia’s Channel 1 and on medici.tv on Wednesday 13 June, from 6pm BST.
