This week, Aida Garifullina makes her house debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu as the eponymous heroine in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
This new production by Stephen Lawless, which originated in Santa Fe, sees the action of Gounod’s sumptuous Shakespearean adaptation transposed to the context of the American Civil War. Josep Pons, the Liceu’s Music Director, leads the chorus and orchestra in the first performance of this opera in Barcelona in over three decades. Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu joins Aida as the star-crossed lover, Roméo.
Performances are on 14, 17 and 22 February, with the final performance on 27 February being broadcast live in HD to cinemas across Europe. For more information, visit the Liceu website.
