Ainars Rubikis will make his debut with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales this week with a performance at the Lichfield Festival, joined by cellist Andrei Ioniță – a former BBC Next Generation Artist – and mezzo-soprano Polly Leech. The programme includes celebrated works by Elgar, namely Enigma Variations and Sea Pictures, as well as Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major. This debut follows previous great success in Wales for Ainars, including performances of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Welsh National Opera during the 2017/18 season. This appearance saw Ainars perform in Wales and on tour across the UK.
Looking ahead, highlights for Ainars’ 2019/20 season will include visits to the Bolshoi Theatre for Dvořák’s Rusalka and symphonic work with the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck and orchestra of the Staatstheater Kassel. In his second season as Music Director of Komische Oper Berlin, Ainars will conduct numerous performances of various operas, including Eugene Onegin, La traviata, Die Zauberflöte, Rigoletto and Schwanda, in addition to symphonic concerts.
