Alisa is one of few musicians who has been honoured with this fellowship, dubbed the ‘Genius Award’
Congratulations are due to Alisa Weilerstein who has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship from the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation.
Today, they named 22 new MacArthur Fellows for 2011. This award is given to a wide range of disciplines and Alisa is one of only a handful of musicians who has been awarded this fellowship since the foundation began in 1981. The fellowships are given in recognition of the recipient’s ‘originality, creativity, self-direction, and capacity to contribute importantly to society through their work.’ The recipients learned, through a phone call out of the blue from the Foundation, that they will each receive $500,000 in no strings-attached supports over the next five years.
