The Hamburger Symphoniker has announced Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță as its Artist-in-Residence for the 2019/20 season. Previous artists-in-residence have included Martin Fröst, Francesco Tristano and Guy Braunstein.
Andrei will perform five concertos during the season: Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations and Dutilleux’s Tout un monde lointain… both with Sylvain Cambreling; Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with Kirill Karabits; Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante with Andris Poga; and CPE Bach’s Concerto A major with Roland Kluttig. He will also give a recital of works by Kodaly, Schumann and Shostakovich.
As a precursor to his residency, Andrei will join the orchestra and conductor Ion Marin for Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, and participate in the Martha Argerich Festival Hamburg alongside Stephen Kovacevich, Lyda Chen, Braunstein and Argerich – both in June 2019.
These concerts conclude a brilliant 201818/19 season, which has seen Andrei perform with the Danish National Symphony, St Petersburg Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and Orchestre National de Belgique, and release his debut solo album on Orchid Classics.
