Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian joins Askonas Holt

Lianna Haroutounian’s remarkable lirico-spinto vocal qualities have distinguished her not only as one of the most sought-after interpreters of Verdi and Puccini heroines, but also of French, Russian and Slavic repertoire.

Having grown up in an opera-loving family in Armenia, Lianna studied piano and voice at the National Conservatory of Erevan, before continuing her studies at the Centre de Formation Lyrique de l’Opéra Bastille.

She burst into the top-flight in 2013, stepping in at short notice to sing Élisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House, with Sir Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann and Ferruccio Furlanetto. Her performance – of which The Guardian wrote “ … Haroutounian seemed to pull forth ever-increasing vocal powers until you thought her heart, or yours, would burst … ” – prompted an immediate re-invitation. Since then, Lianna has performed regularly at the house; most recently as Leonora in Il trovatore.

With an operatic repertoire that includes Élisabeth de Valois, Leonora, Tosca, Mimi, Manon Lescaut and Cio-Cio San, Lianna is a regular guest of the world’s finest houses. Recent highlights include San Francisco Opera (Manon Lescaut), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Cio-Cio San), Teatro Real de Madrid (Leonora), Wiener Staatsoper (Cio-Cio San), Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Élisabeth de Valois), La Monnaie (Adriana Lecouvreur), The Metropolitan Opera (Amelia Grimaldi, Élisabeth de Valois), and Opera Australia (Mimi, Desdemona). Currently singing in a new production of Tosca in Malmö, she will make her Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Cio-Cio San this coming January.

Also active on the concert stage, Lianna has performed Verdi’s Requiem at the Teatro Real, taken part in a Verdi Gala at the Royal Opera House Muscat, and performed Don Carlos in concert at the Verbier Festival, among others.

When making her role debut as Manon Lescaut earlier this season, the San Francisco Classical Voice praised her “superb voice”, “sense of character”, and “vocal and mimetic verve.”

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Lianna to the AH family, where she will be represented by Nathan Morrison and Joel Thomas.
