Thomas Adès CBE

Renowned as both a composer and a performer, Thomas Adès works regularly with the world’s leading orchestras, opera companies and festivals.

Thomas appears regularly with, among others, the Los Angeles, New York and London Philharmonic Orchestras, the Boston, London, BBC and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras. In opera, he recently conducted his latest opera The Exterminating Angel at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House and at the Salzburg Festival.  The piece was awarded World Premiere of the Year at the 2017 Opera Awards.

This season will see the release of Thomas’ album of solo piano music by Janacek, and he will join Simon Keenlyside in a recital of Schubert’s Winterreise at the Vienna State Opera. His other engagements this season include a residency with the Royal Concertgebouworkest, conducting the London and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestras and his debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Thomas also returns to the Royal Opera House twice this season, to conduct Barry’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and the premiere of his new ballet The Dante Project.

Piotr Anderszewski is regarded as one of the outstanding musicians of his generation.

In recent seasons, he has given recitals at London’s Barbican Centre and Royal Festival Hall, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Berlin Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall New York and the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St Petersburg.

His collaborations with orchestra have included appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Chicago and London Symphony orchestras, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. He has also given many performances directing from the keyboard, with orchestras such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Sinfonia Varsovia and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

Piotr has been an exclusive artist with Warner Classics/Erato (previously Virgin Classics) since 2000. His first recording for the label was Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, which went on to receive a number of prizes including an ECHO Klassik award. He has also recorded a Grammy-nominated CD of Bach’s Partitas 1, 3 and 6 and a critically-acclaimed disc of works by Chopin. Piotr’s most recent disc of Bach’s English Suites nos. 1, 3 and 5 was released in November 2014, going on to win both a Gramophone award and an ECHO Klassik award in 2015.

Saleem Ashkar made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 22 and has since gone on to establish an international career. Recent and future concerto highlights include the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the St Louis, Vancouver and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestras.

He has also performed with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre National de Lyon and on a three week tour to Australia. Saleem has a close relationship with many leading conductors including David Afkham, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Jakub Hrůša, Pietari Inkinen, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Kazushi Ono and Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider.

A dedicated recitalist and chamber musician, Saleem has a particularly strong reputation as a Beethoven specialist and has recently performed a complete Sonata cycle in Prague, Duisburg and at the Konzerthaus Berlin. This season he will performing a series of recitals in Copenhagen and Milan exploring the early, middle and late sonatas of Beethoven alongside other composers that were influenced by him.  Other recent and future recital appearances include the Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls in London, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Musikverein Vienna.

Saleem’s most recent recordings have been for Decca Records. They have released the Mendelssohn Piano Concertos with the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Chailly and two Beethoven Concertos with the NDR Elbphilharmonie and Ivor Bolton. Saleem is also recording the complete Beethoven Piano Sonata cycle for Decca, the first three discs of which are already released.

Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. His studies at the Juilliard School were supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award. Emanuel captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv and in 1979 he won the coveted Avery Fisher Prize in New York.

This season Emanuel joins the Wiener Philharmoniker and long-time collaborative partner Bernard Haitink at the Salzburg, BBC Proms and Lucerne Festivals, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle on an extensive tour of China and Hong Kong, and joining the Rotterdam Philharmonic at home in the Netherlands and on tour to the United States. He also returns to the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Tonhalle Zurich, playing concertos by Brahms, Mozart and Chopin. During Summer 2020 Emanuel will also join the Staatskapelle Dresden on tour in the Mediterranean with Myung-Whun Chung.

He also performs extensively in North America, including three concerts with regular partners Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma at Carnegie Hall in March 2020.

Piano & Conductors

Daniel Barenboim

Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires in 1942, and studied piano under his parents. At age 11, he took part in conducting classes in Salzburg, under Igor Markevich

In 1954, Daniel began his recording career as a pianist. In the 1960s, he recorded Beethoven’s Piano Concertos with Otto Klemperer, Brahm’s Piano Concertos with Sir John Barbirolli, and the Mozart piano concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra, this time serving both as pianist and conductor.

Ever since his conducting debut in 1967 in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Daniel has been in great demand with leading orchestras around the world. Between 1975 and 1989, he was principal conductor of the Orchestre de Paris, and he held the position of Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra between 1991 and 2006. Since 1992, Barenboim has been General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where he was also artistic director from 1992 to August 2002. In 2000, the Staatskapelle Berlin appointed him Principal Conductor for Life, and in March 2003, he and the Staatskapelle were honoured with the Wilhelm-Furtwängler-Preis.

Beside his great classic-romantic repertoire, Daniel continues to focus on contemporary music.

“One of the most admired pianists of his generation” (New York Times), Inon Barnatan is celebrated for his poetic sensibility, musical intelligence, and consummate artistry. He inaugurates his tenure as Music Director of California’s La Jolla Music Society Summerfest in July 2019. The coming season brings the release of a two-volume set of Beethoven’s complete piano concertos, which he recorded for Pentatone with Alan Gilbert and London’s Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

Highlights of the 2019/20 season include debuts with Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife, Tiroler Landestheater und Orchester, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orquestra Sinfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Dresdner Philharmonie and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He will also be performing extensively throughout the United States, with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and San Diego Symphony. Inon also makes his solo recital debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, returns to Alice Tully Hall with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and reunites with his frequent recital partner, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, for tours on both sides of the Atlantic. The first takes them to Wigmore Hall (London), Royal Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and La Verdi Auditorium (Milan), while the second sees them celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with performances of his complete cello sonatas in San Francisco and other U.S. cities.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1979, Inon went on to study at London’s Royal Academy of Music. He is a recipient of both the Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, and currently resides in New York.

Kristian Bezuidenhout

Kristian Bezuidenhout is one of today’s most notable and exciting keyboard artists, equally at home on the fortepiano, harpsichord, and modern piano. Born in South Africa in 1979, he began his studies in Australia, completed them at the Eastman School of Music, and now lives in London.
Kristian is a regular guest with the world’s leading ensembles including the Freiburger Barockorchester, Les Arts Florissants, Orchestre des Champs Elysées, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester; and has guest-directed (from the keyboard) the English Concert, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Collegium Vocale,  and Dunedin Consort .
He has performed with celebrated artists including John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, Frans Brüggen, Trevor Pinnock, Giovanni Antonini, Isabelle Faust, Alina Ibragimova, Rachel Podger, Carolyn Sampson, Anne Sofie von Otter and Mark Padmore.

In the 2019-20 season, Kristian play-directs programmes with the Handel & Haydn Society, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Kammerorchester Basel as well as Freiburger Barockorchester and the English Concert. He features as a Portrait Artist for the 19-20 season at BOZAR and is Artist in Residence at Köln Philharmonie.  He has recitals and chamber music performances with Anne Sofie von Otter, Mark Padmore, Benjamin Appl, Carolyn Sampson in concert halls and festivals in Seattle, New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid and Salzburg.

 

The pianist Elisabeth Brauß has been praised by Gramophone Magazine for “the maturity and sophistication of her thoughtful interpretations” which “would be the pride of any pianist twice her age”. Born in Hannover in 1995, Elisabeth is quickly establishing herself as one of the most exciting and versatile musicians of her generation. She is currently a member of the BBC New Generation Artist scheme.

In addition to winning first prize at the International Steinway Competition in Hamburg, and the International Grotrian Steinweg Piano Competition in Braunshweig, Elisabeth was awarded the Prätorius Musikpreis Lower Saxony Prize in 2012. Further accolades include the main and audience awards at the TONALi Grand Prix in Hamburg (2013) and first prize at the Kissinger KlavierOlymp (October 2016).

Elisabeth has worked with orchestras including Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, BBC Scottish Symphony, NDR Elbphilharmonie Hannover, Dortmund Symphoniker and Bochum Symphony. The start of the 19/20 season saw Elisabeth make her BBC Proms in the Park debut in Belfast with the Ulster Orchestra. Further highlights of the season include concerto appearances with BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and Südwestdeutsche Kammersinfonie amongst others.

A keen chamber musician, Elisabeth collaborates regularly with the violinist Noa Wildschut, and the 19/20 season sees a major European tour of venues including Concertgebouw, Philharmonie de Paris, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Palau de la Musica Barcelona, Cologne Philharmonie & Barbican Centre. Elisabeth is also in demand for her solo recitals and appears at venues including Wigmore Hall, Schleswig Holstein Festival and Snape Maltings Festival.

In May 2017, her debut CD featuring works by Beethoven, Prokofiev, Chopin and Denhoff, was released by OehmsClassics. It received critical acclaim and was named as ‘Editor’s Choice’ by Gramophone Magazine.
