“…That a musician this young can play with such sensitivity is humbling, and Lu’s modest, unshowy manner makes you like him even more…”

“Eric Lu has the gift of making old-fashioned high-seriousness seem the most exciting thing in town.”

“Some of his best playing came at the very beginning with Mozart’s famous late Rondo in A minor, one of those late pieces where the conventional turns and graces of the era seem unfathomably remote and strange. Lu emphasised that quality by the way he placed each melody note with exquisite gravity and an inward inflection, as if the piano were speaking to itself.”

“[Lu’s] gift for keeping something in reserve, without actually appearing to, was revealed in [his] performance of Chopin’s last Ballade. [The ending was] an immense whirlwind, plunging to its doom with a majestic finality.”

★★★★ Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 7 April 19

    Album Reviews

“his Chopin sonata is masterly in its grandeur and lyricism, and the Ballade is a delight.”

David Cairns, Sunday Times, 27 January 2019

“With a truly beautiful tone, an innate understanding of the music’s structure, flow and emotional drives and a warm, genuine, unaffected way of shaping the phrases, it sounds as if he has a wise head on young shoulders; his playing combines that with the best of a youthful, fresh response to these perennially-loved masterpieces…Let’s hope this will be his first recording of many.”

    BBC Music Magazine, January 2018

“This is a reading that is full of glinting brilliance on the part of Lu – his dexterity is impressive, as is his trilling, and in the more extrovert moments he is in his element. Yet in the more inward moments, while Lu takes the dynamics down, he doesn’t soften emotionally or display much colouristic range.”

Harriet Smith, Gramophone Magazine, November 2018

“His Beethoven Fourth Concerto, with Edward Gardner and the Hallé, had both maturity and sparkle.”

Nicholas Kenyon, The Observer, 30 September 2018

“Lu seems already to possess something of the magic touch of early Leeds laureates Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu, and is surely one of the most exciting prospects in a long time. A veritable poet of the keyboard.

“Artistry of that kind is rare in pianists of any age; to find it in a 20-year old is simply astounding”

Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph, 17 Sept 18

“The winner was the American pianist Eric Lu, who Chopin sonata took our breath away with its measured grandeur, and whose performance of Beethoven’s fourth concerto held the audience spellbound”
