Enrique Mazzola, Colin Lee and Nikolay Didenko magnificent in La Sonnambula
Hearty congratulations to Askonas Holt trio Enrique Mazzola, Nikolay Didenko and Colin Lee for their magnificent performances on opening night of the much-anticipated new production of La Sonnambula at the Bolshoi yesterday evening.
Didenko (Count Rodolpho) and Lee (Elvino) both sang with great authority and lyricism, with conductor Enrique Mazzola bringing a decidedly Italian warmth to Bellini’s score, despite the freezing Moscow winter.
After a remarkable 120 years since it was last at the Bolshoi (not forgetting six weeks of intensive rehearsals!) the premiere was a glorious success, with the cast receiving rapturous applause for some 20 minutes after the closing bars.
Lee and Mazzola perform in the UK later this summer with Lee at Royal Opera House (Rodrigo / Donna del Lago) and Mazzola at Glyndebourne Festival (Don Pasquale). Didenko is soon to travel to Warsaw for (Fiesco / Simon Boccanegra) and Verdi’s Requiem.
Performances run until 15 March.
