We are delighted to welcome British conductor Finnegan Downie Dear to our roster for general management. Following recent performances, Opera magazine praised his “exemplary clarity and real dramatic zest” while The Independent commended his ability to “find the distinct sonic world of each score…drawing brutally precise and expressive playing”.
Finnegan studied at Cambridge University and at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating from both with distinction. He subsequently worked as an assistant conductor, repetiteur and coach for some of the world’s foremost opera companies, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opernhaus Zürich, Bayerische Staatsoper and the Salzburg Festival. Concert performances include appearances with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Dartington Festival Orchestra and Shadwell Ensemble.
He is Music Director of the award-winning company Shadwell Opera, a group who collaborate with the UK’s finest young singers and instrumentalists, bringing stagings of seminal twentieth-century and contemporary works to new audiences.
This season he made debuts with Polish National Opera, conducting an award-winning production of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, and with Scottish Opera, leading a critically acclaimed production of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Greek.
Future engagements include returns to Polish National Opera and Bayerische Staatsoper as well as projects with the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and Opera North.
In 2017, Finnegan was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
Finnegan will be represented at Askonas Holt by Henry Lindsay and Gaetan Le Divelec.
