Asmik Grigorian & Virginie Verrez open Wiener Staatsoper season

Marking the start of the Wiener Staatsoper’s 20/21 season, and its first performances since its doors were closed in March 2020, Asmik Grigorian and Virginie Verrez return to the stage to star in Puccini’s beloved Madama Butterfly. Asmik plays Cio-Cio-San and Virginie takes on the role of Suzuki.

“I’m looking forward to creating this magic, to feeling this magic,” says Asmik. “It will be special for all of us. I just want to come and enjoy the audience, and share all the emotions together.”

The artists are joined by co-stars Freddie De Tommaso (Pinkerton), Boris Pinkhasovich (Sharpless), Andrea Giovannini (Goro), Hsin-Ping Chang (Solotänzerin), and Tom Yang (Solotänzer). The production was conceived by Anthony Minghella and Philippe Jordan provides musical direction.

The opening night performance will be broadcast, and audiences are invited to tune in to the celebration on Ö1 and ORF III.
