Today sees the international release of Christiane Karg’s latest album featuring songs by Gustav Mahler. It marks the German soprano’s first collaboration with Harmonia Mundi, continuing a diverse discography which includes Gramophone, BBC Music and ICMA award-winning projects.
Joining Christiane for her debut on the French label is long-time recital partner Malcolm Martineau. Together they perform the complete Rückert-Lieder and songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, alongside lesser known numbers from Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit.
The third performer on the disc is Gustav Mahler himself. The composer accompanies Christiane in Ich ging mit Lust and Das himmlische Leben thanks to the existence of piano rolls he recorded in 1905 on the Welte-Mignon reproducing piano which automatically replays tempo, phrasing, dynamics and pedaling – allowing us to hear the music as Mahler intended in a discographic first.
