This coming Sunday sees British baritone Christopher Maltman return to Oper Frankfurt to make his role debut as Don Carlo de Vargas in Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino.
Directed by Tobias Kratzer, Jader Bigamini conducts a first-class cast including German bass Franz-Josef Selig as Marchese von Calatrave / Padre Guardiano.
This debut continues a very exciting season for Christopher, who recently garnered success as Mark Rutland in Nicholas Muhly’s premiere of Marnie at the Met, and saved the day in December by stepping in last minute (for his unofficial role debut) as Don Carlo de Vargas at Cologne Opera.
Looking forward to March 2019, Christopher reprises the role of Don Carlo de Vargas at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Continuing the Verdi theme, he goes on to sing the title role in Rigoletto at the Wiener Staatsoper and at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. He finishes the season at the Salzburg Festival making his role debut in the title role in George Enescu’s Oedipe.
Hugely successful on recital and concert platforms alike, Christopher’s busy opera diary this season is permeated with recitals in San Francisco, Amsterdam & London, as well as Handel’s Messiah with Daniel Harding in Melk, Austria and Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Further Forza performances in Frankfurt take place on 31 January, 3, 7, 9, 15, 17, 23 and 28 February. More information can be found here.
