Aix success for Connolly.
Sarah Connolly is currently enjoying an enormous success as Sesto in a new production of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Connolly last sang the role at the English National Opera in London where her performance won her a nomination for the Olivier Award for ‘outstanding achievement in opera’. That success is now repeated in Aix and the world’s press have been falling over themselves with superlatives in praise of Connolly’s virtuosity. Judy Fayard, writing in the Wall Street Journal, said ‘the Aix Festival rounded out its opening week with a stellar performance by mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly…who virtually walks away with the show—tall, lithe and totally in command, vocally and dramatically’. In the Financial Times, Francis Carlin praised her ‘glorious singing’ while Hugo Shirley in The Telegraph called her performance ‘macho, seductive and wonderfully sung’. Forum Opera summed up her success neatly with the headline ‘Titus règne, mais c’est Sesto qui triomphe !’
