Conductor Cristian Macelaru brings Bernstein, Gershwin and Barber to Edinburgh and Glasgow this week, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus. The all-American programme in celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary includes the composer’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Chichester Psalms, as well as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with American pianist George Li. The concerts conclude with Barber’s First Symphony.
These performances follow #BernsteinAt100 celebrations in Cincinnati last week, which saw Cristian conduct Three Dance Episodes from the Bernstein’s On the Town, and Divertimento, as well as works by Gershwin and Ives.
After his time in Scotland, Cristian will travel to Germany to continue his fruitful collaboration with the Dresdner Philharmonie, with whom he will present Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sixth Symphony and Antonin Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony on 5 May.
Cristian’s performances in Scotland take place on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 April at the Usher Hall Edinburgh and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall respectively. More information can be found on the RSNO website.
