This week Daniel Harding begins rehearsals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in preparation for their summer tour which features performances in the Robeco Summer Nights series at the Concertgebouw and appearances at the Lucerne Festival, Helsinki Music Centre and the Cologne Philharmonie, as well as two performances at major outdoor festivals in the Netherlands.
For the first time in fifteen years, the RCO will perform during SAIL Amsterdam, the largest nautical festival in Europe. In keeping with the event the programme will feature two maritime classics: the Overture to Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer and Debussy’s La Mer.
From one festival to the next, the orchestra will make their debut at one of the most prominent Dutch pop festivals, Lowlands. They will perform Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring at the open air event.
Maestro Harding will be joined by South African pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout who will be appearing as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18. This programme will also include Dvorak’s Otello overture and Symphony no. 8 when in Amsterdam; in Lucerne the concerto will be combined with another Viennese masterpiece, Bruckner’s Symphony no. 5. For their second night in Lucerne they are joined by violinist Isabelle Faust, who will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.
Daniel Harding returns to Amsterdam later this season to conduct two separate programmes featuring works by Bach and Brahms.
