Deborah Warner’s award-winning Billy Budd opens in Rome



On Tuesday 8 May, Deborah Warner’s highly-acclaimed production of Billy Budd will open at Opera di Roma. Premiering last year at Teatro del Real in Madrid, it recently won Best New Production at the 2018 Opera Awards. The cast features Jacques Imbrailo as Billy Budd and AH artist Toby Spence as Captain Vere. As co-producers, the production will appear at Opera di Roma for the first time, before transferring to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, making its British debut there in April 2019. Performances at the Opera di Roma take place from 8 to 15 May 2018.

It is a busy time for Deborah Warner, who remains in Italy to revive her 2006 production of Beethoven’s Fidelio at La Scala, Milan in June. Originally performed in 2001 at Glyndebourne, Deborah will present the 2006 revival at La Scala with an all-star cast including Stuart Skelton as Florestan and Simone Schneider as Leonore. Performances run from 18 June to 7 July 2018.
