Etienne Dupuis makes BBC Symphony Orchestra debut

Etienne Dupuis makes his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in their performance of Berlioz’s oratorio, L’enfance du Christ. Conducted by Edward Gardner, Etienne is joined by Robert Murray and Matthew Rose.

Etienne will also be making an appearance at Opera de Marseille for performances of La traviata (Germont) and Faust (Valentin), joined by Nicole Car for both productions. Other appearances this season include title role Eugene Onegin for Deutsche Oper Berlin, title role Don Giovanni for Opera de Paris and an Australian recital tour with Nicole.

This concert sees Edward continue his ongoing relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra — whom he has conducted at both the First and Last Night of the Proms. Other London highlights this season include his Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut with a new production of Katya Kabanova (also featuring Andrew Staples and Dominic Sedgwick) and concerts at the Royal Festival Hall with both the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia.

Robert performs the part of the narrator in L’enfance du Christ. A number of other appearances with Edward Gardner over the past seasons have included Dream of Gerontius in Seattle and Peter Grimes at the Edinburgh Festival. Elsewhere, recent highlights include Dream of Gerontius in Boston with Benjamin Zander, Tom Rakewell at Wilton’s Music Hall with Laurence Cummings, Calixto Bieito’s staging of the St John Passion in Bilbao, and Katie Mitchell’s original production of Written on Skin in Beijing and Shanghai. In the new year, Robert makes a return to the English National Opera, to perform the role of Camille in Merry Widow.

Matthew returns to the BBC Symphony Orchestra as Herod/Father for this performance. Matthew’s season began at the Metropolitan Opera in performances as Colline La Boheme and Ashby La Fanciulla del West alongside taking up his post as the Artistic Consultant to the Lindemann Young Artists Program. He returned to London to give a highly acclaimed performance of The Rake’s Progress with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the New Year, Matthew returns to the States to play Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Philadelphia Opera, followed by Mozart Requiem with the New York Philharmonic and Pimen Boris Godunov with Royal Opera House.

The performance takes place on 17 December 2018 at the Barbican. For more information, see the BBC Symphony Orchestra website.
