Toi toi toi to Frederic Wake-Walker whose production of Ariadne auf Naxos opens at La Scala Milan next week, conducted by Franz Wesler-Möst and with a cast that includes Pavel Kolgatin as Brighella and Christina Gansch as Najade – both of whom make their house debuts.
This marks Frederic’s much anticipated return to La Scala following his critically acclaimed debut with Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in 2016, and his La finta giardiniera earlier this season. It also marks the end of a very busy 2018/19 season during which Frederic also staged Peter Grimes at Cologne Opera, the Messiah at the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, and Ariadne auf Naxos in Cleveland.
Highlights of Christina’s 2018/19 season include her American debut as Dorinda Orlando for the San Francisco Opera; Gretchen in a new production of Schumann’s Szenen aus Goethes Faust for the Hamburgische Staatsoper; and Dew Fairy in a new production of Hänsel und Gretel for the Royal Opera. This summer, she will return to the BBC Proms, singing Schubert’s Einsamkeit for soprano and orchestra with BBC Symphony and Semyon Bychkov.
A member of the ensemble at Wiener Staatsoper, Pavel recently made his debut at Teatro di San Carlo as Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. This season also includes performances at the Rossini Opera Festival in L’equivoco stravagante, and his debut as Lensky in Eugene Onegin at the New National Theater Tokyo.
Ariadne auf Naxos runs from 23 April to 22 May. For more information and tickets, see the La Scala website.
