This weekend, George Benjamin and Cédric Tiberghien perform with the Berliner Philharmoniker. George conducts a programme of Boulez Cummings ist der Dichter, Ligeti’s Clocks and Clouds, Benjamin’s Palimpsests (the first part of which was written for Boulez’ 75th birthday) and Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand with Cédric making his debut with the orchestra.
George is the 2018/19 season composer in residence at the Berliner Philharmoniker in cooperation with the Berliner Festspiele/Musikfest Berlin. After this weekend, he will be conducting his chamber opera Into the Little Hill on the 12 September with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at the Philharmonie, before returning in November to conduct the Berlin premiere of Written on Skin. Other highlights for George this season include the Hamburg premiere of Written on Skin in November 2018 and a European tour with Ensemble Modern in March 2019.
Cédric will be returning to the Philharmonie in February 2019 to make his first appearance with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the following week will be making his NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester debut. Other highlights of the 2018/19 season include his first appearance with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, a new music theatre project on Schumann’s Dichterliebe called Zauberland with soprano Julia Bullock that will be premiered at Theatre des Bouffes du Nord (Paris) in April 2019, and also solo recitals in London, Chicago and Tokyo.
