George Benjamin conducts the Hamburg and Berlin premieres of Written on Skin

This season, George Benjamin is a featured artist at both the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Berlin Philharmonie. As part of his work with both venues, he will be conducting the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the Hamburg and Berlin premieres of his opera Written on Skin on the 10 and 12 November.

Written on Skin was written for the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and received its premiere at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2012.  George said: “This opera was designed for the Mahler Chamber Orchestra… I could remember the sound of the orchestra and its special qualities while writing… I was physically struck by the sound the orchestra makes; it has a sort of golden colour. It was one of the most important, meaningful musical collaborations I can remember in all my life.”

Robert Murray appears once more as Third Angel/John, having previously performed the parts with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, on tour in Europe and as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival at New York’s Lincoln Center. Also in the cast for Hamburg and Berlin will be Georgia Jarman, Evan Hughes, Bejun Mehta (who created the role of Angel 1/The Boy in 2012) and Victoria Simmonds. These performances will be directed by Ben Davis.

The Berlin performance of Written on Skin on the 12 September will be broadcast live on the Digital Concert Hall.

Tickets and more information can be found on the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg website and the Berlin Philharmonie website.
