Congratulations to George Benjamin and Iestyn Davies who have been announced as winners at the 2014 Gramophone Awards.
George Benjamin has received the accolade in the ‘Contemporary’ category for the DVD of his opera Written on Skin at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The DVD was released in January on the Opus Arte label and has inspired renewed claims that this is one of the greatest operas of the 21st Century. Geoff Brown of The Times commented that it is “The first truly great opera of the 21st century…the [its] communicative power is immense, with Benjamin’s highly coloured music, never forbiddingly complex, consistently moving in step with Martin Crimp’s tangy and chiselled words.”.
Adding to his collection of awards, Iestyn Davies’s recording Arise, my muse on the Wigmore Live label is the winner of the ‘Recital’ category. Gramophone commented that “This is a disc that reminds us why live recital programmes are such a valuable part of recorded repertoire…”
Both of these recordings will join the other category winners to be in the running to receive the coveted title of ‘Recording of the Year’ at the Awards ceremony which will be held on 17th September. Other awards which will be announced on the day, are the Lifetime Achievement, Young Artist of the Year, Label of the Year and the publicly chosen Artist of the Year, the latter category also including Askonas Holt artists Iestyn Davies, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Alisa Weilerstein and Alina Ibragimova.
