This coming Saturday sees Handel’s Ariodante commence at Chicago Lyric Opera; their last main-stage opera of the season.
Making its US debut, this Lyric Opera co-production from director Richard Jones has been a highly anticipated premiere for the house. Revived by director Ben Davis and conducted by Harry Bicket, Saturday promises be a first-class evening involving a stand-out cast including Iestyn Davies as Polinesso and Heidi Stober as Dalinda.
This continues an exciting season for Iestyn, who recently garnered success as Terry Rutland in Nicholas Muhly’s premiere of Marnie at the Metropolitan Opera. Looking forward to July and October 2019 he returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden respectively for Ottone Agrippina. In addition to his busy opera diary, this year Iestyn joins William Christie and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Labadie with Les Violons du Roy and the Handel & Haydn Society, Jonathan Cohen and Arcangelo at the BBC Proms, and a tour with Britten Sinfonia.
Soprano Heidi Stober’s season continues to go from strength to strength. 2018/19 opened with a huge success for Heidi in San Francisco as Zdenka Arabella, followed by her house and role debut at Dutch National Opera as Antigone Oedipe. After Heidi’s appearances in Chicago she will return to San Francisco Opera as Angelica Orlando and to her ‘home’ house, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in August.
Performances in Chicago continue a busy period in the US for Harry, who conducted The Cleveland Orchestra in February, and will lead Music of the Baroque on 3 and 6 March in a programme including Rameau’s Suite from Les Boréades. Read more about Harry’s US performances here.
Ariodante opens on Saturday 2 March, with further performances on 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17March. Further information can be found here.
