Last night, Ian Bostridge began a European tour with acclaimed jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, performing at the Philharmonie, Paris. Following a chance meeting at Schloss Elmau, the duo decided to embark on a new musical partnership combining their expertise in jazz and song, with Brad writing new music specifically with Ian in mind. The result is The Folly of Desire, a song cycle composed by Brad with lyrics from the poetry of Shakespeare, E.E. Cummings, Brecht, Yeats, Goethe, Blake, and more. Alongside premiere performances of The Folly of Desire, the duo perform Schumann’s Dichterliebe.
Last night was the first of six European concerts, with Ian and Brad travelling to Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Luxembourg and Berlin. An American tour is planned for Autumn 2019.
