Jonathan Cohen on his BBC Proms debut

Jonathan Cohen and his ensemble Arcangelo will make their BBC Proms debut on Saturday 13 August. We asked Jonathan how he felt about his first appearance at the festival…

“We’re thrilled to be making our proms debut this year at the gorgeous and intimate Sam Wanamaker playhouse at the Globe Theatre. The BBC Proms is Britain’s most celebrated and spirited music festival and it’s a real joy for myself and Arcangelo to play here.

The ingenious choice of venue [the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe Theatre] is perfectly suited for the incidental music from Purcell and Locke inspired by Shakespeare themes, namely ‘The Fairy Queen’ and ‘The Tempest’ as well as other delights. I’m glad to present three fantastic young British singers to play varied dramatic roles in this concert – the soprano Katherine Watson, tenor Sam Boden and bass Callum Thorpe – and I’m very happy to receive the guidance of director Alessandro Talevi who will create a ‘mise en espace’ for us.”

Jonathan Cohen directs Arcangelo in a programme of early vocal music inspired by the works of Shakespeare, as part of the ‘Proms at…’ series on Saturday 13 August 2016. Performances take place at 3pm and 8pm at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
