Lars Vogt returns to Gateshead this weekend to open his third season as Music Director of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. The programme for the opening night concert includes works by Copland, Barber, Haydn and Dvořák. The next two weeks will see him perform his much-acclaimed interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, popularised by his successful recording with Ondine which Gramophone described as “a distinguished addition to the discography of the Goldberg Variations in all their glorious elegance”, and a return with the orchestra to the Lammermuir Festival.
The key theme for the orchestra’s 2017/18 season is Bach and Sons & Daughters, which features works from the composer, his sons and daughters, and composers of later generations who have felt his influence most strongly. As well as performing in the UK, Lars will be taking the orchestra on a tour to Vienna, Budapest and Japan.
On the radio
Lars’ performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 22 September. Listen here.
