Friday evening sees Joyce DiDonato’s opening night at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona in the title role of Donizetti’s ‘Maria Stuarda’ in a new co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Polish National Opera and Théâtre des Champs Elysées conducted by Maurizio Benini. The premiere of this production took place in the summer at Covent Garden where DiDonato was hailed by the critics as “transcendent” (The Independent) and “miraculous” (What’s On Stage).
A signature role for DiDonato, she was the first artist ever to sing the role at the Metropolitan Opera Company’s premiere of this great work on New Year’s Eve 2012. Those iconic performances were captured as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Live in HD’ series broadcast in cinemas worldwide and released on DVD earlier this year, winning Gramophone’s DVD of the Month (August 2014) heralding DiDonato as “…an absolute knock-out…spellbinding through a perfect combination of singing and acting”.
