Kaspar Holten’s production of Don Giovanni opens at the Liceu Barcelona next week, conducted by Josep Pons. The esteemed cast includes Miah Persson as Donna Elvira, Anatoli Sivko as Leporello and Toby Spence making his house debut as Don Ottavio.
Miah Persson returns to the Liceu as Donna Elvira, a role she has previously performed for Opera de Lyon at the Royal Opera House Muscat, Theatre des Champs Elysees and Glyndebourne Festival. Earlier this year Miah received great critical acclaim for her performances of L’incoronazione di Poppea with Concerto Italiano at Carnegie Hall, Mahler Symphony No. 4 with Basque National Orchestra and Philharmonie Luxembourg, and for her solo recital tour of North America. Forthcoming, Miah will perform Van der Aa’s Blank Out at the Lucerne Festival and at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, and Mahler Symphony No. 2 at Teatro alla Scala.
Toby Spence makes his debut at the Liceu as Don Ottavio, having previously sung the role for the Wiener Staatsoper. Toby’s other engagements this season include Captain Vere in Teatro Real Madrid’s new production of Billy Budd and Tito La Clemenza di Tito at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe. His concert appearances include The Creation with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Mass in C with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Berlioz Requiem with the BBC Symphony, War Requiem at the Slovak Philharmonic Concert Hall and with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Britten Nocturne with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Das Lied von der Erde at the Heidelberg Festival and Beethoven Missa Solemnis with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Further ahead, Toby will sing Bruckner’s F minor Mass with the Sinfonieorchester Basel and Anatol Vanessa for Frankfurt Opera.
Anatoli Sivko makes his role debut as Leporello at Liceu Barcelona before performing Don Basilio with Glyndebourne Touring Opera in Il Barbiere di Siviglia later this year. A recipient of several prestigious prizes at the Neue Stimmen Competition (First Prize) and the International Francisco Vinas Competition, Anatoli is rapidly building an international reputation, collaborating with distinguished conductors such as Vladimir Spivakov, Vasily Petrenko and Dmitri Jurowski. Anatoli recently made his North American debut as Il Re in Aida with Opéra de Montréal in addition to making his house debuts with Un ballo in Maschera at Bayerische Staatsoper and Pique Dame at Netherlands Opera. Looking further ahead, Anatoli returns to Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House to sing Masetto in Don Giovanni.
Don Giovanni opens at the Liceu on 19 June, with Miah Persson performing Donna Elvira on 21, 26, 28, 30 June, 2 July 2017. Toby Spence and Anatoli Sivko perform 20, 22, 27 June, 1 & 2 July 2017.
