Good luck to Michael Tilson Thomas who this week embarks on an eight date tour of the United States with his orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony. This tour is a double celebration, marking both Michael Tilson Thomas’ 20th anniversary as Music Director with the San Francisco Symphony, and his 70th birthday. The orchestra kick off this Wednesday, 12 November, in Kansas City and after whirlwind visits to Ann Arbor, Cleveland, Boston, Princeton and New York’s Carnegie Hall the tour finishes off, on Saturday 22 November, in Miami – Michael Tilson Thomas’ other orchestra home. With programmes that include Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 and with violinist Gill Shaham playing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, this promises to take the US by storm.
And if this wasn’t enough, Michael Tilson Thomas’ new disc, on San Francisco Symphony’s own label, ‘Masterpieces in Miniature’ is also released this week, featuring brief but brilliant works by Fauré, Mahler, Delius and many others.
