Mikhail Petrenko debuts as Boris Godunov with Geneva Opera

Toi toi toi to bass Mikhail Petrenko who makes his house debut this weekend as the title role in Boris Godunov with Geneva Opera at their temporary home of Opéra des Nations under the esteemed baton of Paolo Arrivabeni and director Matthias Hartmann.

This continues a very busy year for Mikhail who returned to the Metropolitan Opera earlier this year as Orest in Elektra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin to critical acclaim.

“… the excellent singing and characterization of bass Mikhail Petrenko as Orest. (…) Petrenko’s Orest was calm, stately, and sinister, and he expressed a closeness to Elektra that, through unadorned gestures, showed the quasi-incestful love between the two that Hofmaansthal penned and Strauss scored.” New York Classical Review, Friday 2 March 2018

This season he makes his Teatro alla Scala theatre debut in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina under Valery Gergiev with whom he collaborates regularly. Mikhail will also make his Maggio Musicale Fiorentino debut in Der fliegende Holländer.

Concert engagements this season include European performances of Shostakovich Symphony No. 13 under Ingo Metzmacher with the NDR Radio Symphony at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester at the Philharmonie Berlin. Under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Mikhail will perform with the Rotterdam Philharmonic performing in De Doelen Rotterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris, and Konzerthaus Dortmund.

Mikhail performs in Boris Godunov on 28 October, and on 3, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 November. For tickets and further information, please visit the Grande Théâtre de Genève website.
