Imogen Cooper’s new disc, Imogen Cooper plays Beethoven, is now available on Chandos Records.
The disc features Beethoven’s Eleven Bagatelles Op. 119, Thirty-three Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli Op. 120, and Bagatelle WoO 59 Für Elise. The Diabelli Variations featured in Imogen’s recitals last season, and received high praise at Wigmore Hall in June 2018:
“Imogen Cooper’s are very much the right hands, containing a rare, refined artistry that only continues to grow with the years … The culminating fugue powered along, indomitable, before the final moment of anguish that ushers in a last, transcendental minuet. This was expertly shaped and finally left us hovering in mid air, almost scared to breathe.” Jessica Duchen, The Arts Desk
Imogen writes of the Diabelli variations: “Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations are rightly considered to be among the greatest works for solo piano ever composed, by Beethoven or anyone else. It is incontrovertible that there is not one superfluous note in this huge masterpiece – each variation is flawless in construction and imagination, and in depth of characterisation. The breadth of ideas is limitless. Each variation tells a whole story, and for all that some are connected in mood, it is no mean feat as a performer to respect the huge scope of Beethoven’s vision.”
