Viennese Oedipus for Bostridge and Kirchschlager
Congratulations to Ian Bostridge, Angelika Kirchschlager who have recently sung their first Oedipus and Jocasta in acclaimed concerts of Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the BBC Philharmonic under H.K. Gruber in the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and the Vienna Konzerthaus as part of the Vienna Konzerthaus Centenary celebration concerts. They were joined by fellow Askonas Holt singers Timothy Robinson and Neal Davies in the roles of Shepherd and Messenger.
Bostridge, especially, was superb — capturing the increasing turmoil of the doomed king without contravening the work’s austere, ritualistic style. With his sudden snarls and deranged glissandos he truly made Oedipus complex.

Oedipus was played by Ian Bostridge, Stravinskyan stylisation suits him rather well, and he charted the progression from hauteur to debasement with passion and commitment.
