Oliver Johnston & Benjamin Hulett make house debuts in Madrid

Tonight, British tenors Oliver Johnston and Benjamin Hulett make house debuts at the Teatro Real Madrid in Robert Carsen’s new production of Idomeneo. A co-production with the Canadian Opera Company of Toronto and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Idomeneo is conducted by Ivor Bolton, and stars Oliver Johnston in his role debut as the High Priest, Benjamin Hulett as Arbace, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk as the voice of Neptune.

Oliver will reprise his role as the High Priest when the production travels to Rome in November 2019, marking yet another house debut for the tenor whose recent seasons have seen debuts at Aldeburgh Festival, Opera North and BBC Proms, among others. In Rome, Oliver will be joined on stage by Miah Persson (Elettra) and Rosa Feola (Ilia).

Following performances in Rome, Benjamin will join The English Concert for Semele, as it continues its Handel opera series with performances in New York, Philadelphia, Ann Arbor and Dartmouth, and in Europe at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Sage Gateshead and Barbican Centre.

Ukrainian bass Alexander Tsymbalyuk makes his second appearance at Teatro Real in as many months, following his “impeccable” (codalario.com) house debut as Fafner Das Rheingold in January 2019. Later this season, Alexander will return to Opéra de Paris for Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, and the Bayerische Staatsoper for Turandot and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Idomeneo runs from 19 February to 1 March 2019. For more information, see the Teatro Real Madrid website.
