American cellist Alisa Weilerstein doesn’t take the obvious path when choosing the repertoire for her performances. For this Sinfini Session she’s chosen to play a piece which shows off the many facets of her cello playing, from her deep and resonant lower register to the singing tones of her upper register. It’s titled ‘Omaramor’ by the Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov, a fantasia based on ‘My Beloved Buenos Aires’ by tango singer Carlos Gardel, recorded for her recent solo album (entitled ‘Solo’). The musical story is told in under eight minutes of spell-binding performance, filmed in a stark loft-space in East London.
