This week, Georgian tenor Otar Jorjikia makes his Australian debut as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen with Opera Australia, alongside Sian Pendry as Carmen and Michael Honeyman as Escamillo. John Bell’s bold production brings the intense relationships of gypsy girls and bull-fighting boys to vivid life above the constant undertones of fate.
Otar’s performances in Australia follow recent appearances at St Peterburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (in Simon Boccanegra and Attila), and precede his return to the Bolshoi Theatre later this season in La traviata under Tugan Sokhiev. He also performs under Leonard Slatkin and Orchestre National de Lyon, in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
Performances will be at Joan Sutherland Theatre at Sydney Opera House on 2, 10, 15, 17 and 23 March. For more information, please visit the Sydney Opera House website.
