: On a US duo recital tour this September, Stephen Costello
and Ailyn Pérez
– the husband-and-wife team dubbed “Pérello” by the BBC and “the Jay-Z and Beyoncé” of opera by Vanity Fair – sing romantic favorites from their hit album release, ‘Love Duets’. The tour takes the Richard Tucker Award-winners, together with pianist Danielle Orlando, to the San Diego Opera, for a concert to benefit the recently-revived company (5 September); the Washington National Opera (10 September); the Dallas Opera (14 September); and Opera Philadelphia, where they launch the company’s 40th Anniversary Season with a special gala performance in the city where they first fell in love (12 September).

Stephen Costello and Ailyn Pérez’s debut duo album ‘Love duets’ is released in the UK on 5 May 2014. The CD, released by Warner Classics, features romantic love duets by Verdi, Puccini, Bernstein, and others, and was recorded with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Patrick Summers, in December 2013.
Described by Vanity Fair as “a match made in verismo heaven,” theirs is a love story that is the stuff of opera itself. The young American soprano and tenor met at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, where an on stage romance in Puccini’s most beloved opera kindled the flames of a real-life passion.
Costello and Pérez are the only married couple to boast having two prestigious Richard Tucker Awards on the mantelpiece: Costello took home the “Heisman Trophy of opera” in 2009 and Pérez won in 2012, becoming the first Hispanic singer to do so in the award’s history. When they performed together at the 2012 Richard Tucker Gala, which was broadcast nationally in the U.S. and is still available for on-demand streaming, the New York Times’s Anthony Tommasini admired their “palpable chemistry.”
This season, Pérez and Costello appear in performance together across the globe, headlining in London, Berlin, San Francisco and Washington, and giving concerts in New York, London, Washington, Philadelphia and San Francisco. This month the pair star opposite each other as Violetta and Alfredo in La traviata
at the Royal Opera House
Covent Garden, alongside the Giorgio Germont of Simon Keenlyside
to watch an interview with Ailyn and Stephen on BBC Breakfast on Friday 2 May.
