This week sees Rafael Payare embark on a tour of summer festivals, which will include his debut with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood Festival and return visits to Chicago Symphony at the Ravinia Festival and the BBC Proms with the Ulster Orchestra which will mark his final concert as Music Director.
Beginning his tour at the Grand Teton Festival, Rafael will conduct a programme of Smetana, Beethoven and Schumanns’ Cello Concerto with critically acclaimed cellist Alisa Weilerstein. Performing at the Walk Festival Hall, he will give concerts on 19 and 20 of July. You can find more information here.
Rafael then returns to the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal for his debut at the Festival de Lanaudière on 27 July, conducting works by Dukas and Tchaikovsky. He will also be joined on stage by Arthur and Lucas Jussen for Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. You can find more information here.
The following week sees Rafael back in the US and returning to the Ravinia Festival. Giving two concerts on 1 and 2 August with Chicago Symphony, he will conduct a programme of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with pianist Yefim Bronfman as well as Beethoven Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven Symphony No. 3 followed by Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with pianist Emanuel Ax.
For the final leg of the tour, Rafael goes to the Tanglewood Festival with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be both his debut conducting the orchestra as well as his debut at the festival and will be broadcast live. Conducting a programme including Carreno and Brahms, Rafael will also conduct Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with pianist Nikolai Lugansky. You can find more information here.
