Rebecca Tong has been awarded First Prize at the La Maestra conducting competition, the finals of which were held at the Philharmonie de Paris this weekend. Rebecca also received the Arte Prize and French Concert Halls and Orchestras Prize, impressing a jury headed by Ewa Bogusz-Moore and including conductors Marin Alsop and Lionel Bringuier.
A native Indonesian of Chinese decent, Rebecca is a former Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music where she worked with the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and The Hallé. She is currently Resident Conductor of Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and founder of the Jakarta Christian Youth Orchestra.
Rebecca is one of nine inaugural Lies Askonas Fellows. The Fellowship scheme was established in 2019 in honour of our entrepreneurial female founder with a view to support young talent through personalized mentorship and guidance. The list of inaugural Fellows also include conductors Holly Choe, who made it through to La Maestra’s semi-final round, and Bertie Baigent, who reached the final of the Guido Cantelli Conducting Competition held in Italy last week.
